Misconception
The following writing is a typical explanation given to the concept of “the poor in spirit.” But, it does not explain the true meaning of being “poor in spirit.”
- To be contentedly poor, willing to be emptied of worldly wealth, if God orders that to be our lot; to bring our mind to our condition, when it is a low condition. Many are poor in the world, but high in spirit, poor and proud, murmuring and complaining, and blaming their lot, but we must accommodate ourselves to our poverty, must know how to be abased, Philippians 4:12. Acknowledging the wisdom of God in appointing us to poverty, we must be easy in it, patiently bear the inconveniences of it, be thankful for what we have, and make the best of that which is. It is to sit loose to all worldly wealth, and not set our hearts upon it, but cheerfully to bear losses and disappointments which may befall us in the most prosperous state. (This text has only explained what it means to be meek, and meaning of detachment, which two concepts are essentials to good religious life.)
- ...but if we be rich in the world we must be poor in spirit, that is, we must condescend to the poor and sympathize with them, as being touched with the feeling of their infirmities; we must expect and prepare for poverty; must not inordinately fear or shun it, but must bid it welcome, especially when it comes upon us for keeping a good conscience, Hebrews 10:34. Job was poor in spirit, when he blessed God in taking away, as well as giving.
- It is to be humble and lowly in our own eyes. To be poor in spirit, is to think meanly of ourselves, of what we are, and have, and do; the poor are often taken in the Old Testament for the humble and self-denying, as opposed to those that are at ease, and the proud; it is to be as little children in our opinion of ourselves, weak, foolish, and insignificant, … It is to look with a holy contempt upon ourselves, to value others and undervalue ourselves in comparison of them. It is to be willing to make ourselves cheap, and mean, and little, to do good; to become all things to all men. It is to acknowledge that God is great, and we are mean; that he is holy and we are sinful; that he is all and we are nothing, less than nothing, worse than nothing; and to humble ourselves before him, and under his mighty hand.
- The great and high-spirited go away with the glory of the kingdoms of the earth; but the humble, mild, and yielding souls obtain the glory of the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3
Please note that Humility is not poverty and poverty is not humility. In the presence of God, the rich is not more favoured, and the poor is not les-privileged.
Majority are poor, without knowing that it is not good to be poor in spirit. “17 Because you say,'I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' — and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked — 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” Revelation 3:17-19
For over 30 years I have heard ministers of God explain the statement, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven". None of them has been able to give the correct interpretation. Herein you will find the complete explanation. See Benefits Of Life In Spirit And In Truth
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4
This blessing is for those who:
- Mourn.
- Regret for sins they have committed.
- Mourn also for the sins of others.
- Sigh and cry because of abominations, Ezekiel 9:4.
- Suffer.
- Lose loved ones to death.
- Have sympathy for the afflictions of others.
- Mourn with those who mourn, and weep with them that weep.
For they shall be comforted means God will wipe away every tear from their eyes (God will also restore manifold all that they lost in the world.):
1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."
Revelation 21:1-4
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5
Who are the meek?
- Those who quietly submit themselves to God, to follow His footstep.
- Who are gentle towards all men (Titus 3:2).
- Who calmly bear provocation without being inflamed by it.
- Who return a soft answer.
- Who can show their displeasure, without being disrespectful or arrogant.
- Who are quickly and easily pacified.
- Who would rather forgive injuries than revenge one.
- Who control their anger.
- Who are obedient.
- Those who are calmly active and actively calm.
They shall inherit the earth because:
- Real blessings are spiritual blessings, and not the gains of earthly life as man understands and pursues.
- They shall inherit the earth; Meekness promotes our health, wealth, comfort, and safety in life.
- The good things of life are not the money and wealth people have. They are spiritual blessings, such as peace, love, safety, wisdom, health, etc.
- Those who gain these blessings are the ones who practice detachment, calmness, selflessness and meditation. They use their earthly wealth to gain everlasting treasures, while those who seek worldly gains lose both earthly and heavenly treasures at death.
- The earth is God’s own school. It is necessary for a while, and shall perish. It is castle of illusion designed to teach the children of God by experience, which is the best teacher.
- The meek feed on the nectar of the world, which is heavenly type of life.
Indeed, twice blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit both the earth and
the heaven.
Become As Meek As The Lamb
The lamb is meek, indeed, because of the following reasons:
- It depends solely on its owner for its food.
- It does not live a life full of worry or anxiety.
- It does not worry about this or that.
- It does not complain.
- It lives a life of freedom, resting all responsibilities on its owner.
- It is always full of joyfulness and gladness, leaping about in joy and contentment.
Likewise, the meek are the true devotees of God, because:
- They are gentle and meek in life.
- They depend on God for their sustenance and needs.
- They do not worry themselves with numerous desires.
- Being desireless, they are free from disappointments and anger; they are free from the the law of kerma.
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 "So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Matthew 6:25-34
- They do not retaliate, because wrong does not appease wrong.
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' 39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
Matthew 5:38-42
- Spiritually, they submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. God’s will become their will and they prosper in spirituality. The God in them becomes manifest to their own advantage.
A minister of God was praying for many members, and God said to him, “Make the pasture good. When the sheep come, they shall not only eat pasture, but also lie down.”
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled (satisfied). Matthew 5:6
Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are those who:
- Live in righteousness.
- Want to be doing good, but are prevented from doing so by the rich and mighty men of the world.
- Desire only that which is just and equal, but it is denied them by those that neither fear God nor regard men.
- Want to grow in the spiritual knowledge and wisdom, but cannot or are prevented from doing so.
- Want to worship God in spirit and in truth.
- Suffer hardships with a good conscience.
- Quietly refer themselves to God to plead their cause.
For they shall be satisfied means:
- They shall be given the Holy Spirit to do so, even for eternity.
- They shall experience the righteousness of God, which alone is a great and abundant blessing.
- They shall be set free from the cycle of birth, disease, decay and death. They shall attain heavens, and would not have to reincarnate again to experience sufferings on earth.
- Those who persist and grow in spirit shall attain incorruptibility. “12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.” Revelation 3:12
- The law of spirit is that you are attached to whatever you hunger and thirst after.
- Furthermore, they shall be satisfied with rich blessings of God. God will give them everlasting kingdom of peace, love, righteousness and treasures. God has made it known that it is better for people to receive their blessings in heaven, which blessings are everlasting, than to receive earthly blessings, which do not last.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5:7
The merciful are those who:
- Are truly merciful.
- Have sympathy.
- Partake of the afflictions of others.
- Are considerate.
- Contribute all they can for the assistance of those who are in need.
- Help others.
- Pity the ignorant, and teach them the Truth.
- Warn the careless.
- Strive to covert those who are in the state of sinfulness.
- Feed the hungry.
- Have advantage over others, but are not rigorous and severe with them.
In summary, attend to the needs of others, without discrimination. “34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.' " Matthew 25:34-36
The universe is governed by a network of laws, which are God’s will in creation. The laws are perfect, unfailing, and universal. In addition, the laws return to everyone whatever he has done to others, even so manifold. By being merciful, a person ensures abundance of mercy and gain for himself. Because mercy is an act of selflessness, the person frees himself from reincarnation. As long as a person is merciless, he binds himself to the lower regions of darkness, and has to be reborn on earth to undergo further suffering as a way of purifying himself.
The merciful shall obtain mercy because they:
- Obtain release from karma.
- Obtain Release from reincarnation – the cycle of birth, disease, decay and death.
- Receive aid and God’s help in their time of need.
- Inherit the everlasting kingdom.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Matthew 5:8
Who are the pure in heart? They are those who:
- Do not entertain impure thoughts.
- Do not say immoral or vulgar words.
- Do not take irrelevant actions.
- Have attained the notion of non-duality.
- Have peace of mind.
- Miss out on opportunities for good and fortune, and yet complain not.
- Observe quiet times, which frees them from all the cares and worries of earthly life.
- Do not feed their mind with bad news, evil videos, etc.
- Free themselves from fleshly lusts.
- Are not accustomed to incessant desires.
- Those who do not desire what belongs to others.
- They do not plot or rise against others.
Their blessings include:
- They attain heaven.
- They shall see God, in heaven, even while on earth.
- They have Angel visitors.
- They see God as He is, face to face.
- They shall experience God.
- The Holy Spirit becomes their everyday companion and guide.
Triple Blessing For The Pure In Heart
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Indeed, twice blessed are the pure in heart, for they not only see God, but
also know Him, for there are many things which you see, but do not know about.
And triple blessed are the pure in heart, for they also experience God. And I tell you the truth,
those who experience God have overcome the world. They become one with God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9
The peacemakers are the following:
- Those who have a peaceable disposition – tendency for peace.
- Those who love, desire and delight in peace.
- Those who make peace between opponents.
- Those who ensure peace.
- Those who pursue peace.
- Those who prevent crisis.
- Those who speak soft words (return soft answer).
- Those who accommodate others.
- Those who settle quarrels.
- Those who do all they can to reconcile those who are at variance.
- Those who promote love among mankind.
- Those who turn sinners from everlasting doom to everlasting life.
They maintain what God has created. Peacemaking is a sign of true sons of God. Peacemakers ensure peace, love, harmony, law and order. They protect lives and properties. God is God of peace. Therefore, they are true children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:10
11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:11-12
The persecution includes all kinds of suffering, from the least to the greatest,
meted out to a person because of God and righteousness. Such a person may be hunted, pursued, run down, excommunicated, killed, fined, imprisoned, despoiled of their belongings, banished, excluded from places of profit and trust, tortured, delivered to death, scourged and accounted as sheep for the slaughter, etc. They are reviled, and have all manner of evil said against them.
Truly, no effort, service or suffering, is a wasted effort.
Their reward is great - Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"So they persecuted the prophets that were before you. - Your persecution is an evidence that you are doing the right thing.
Take consolation in the fact that it is not only you that has been persecuted.
Blessed Is He Whose Heart Is Not In What He Sees.
A person’s heart is in what he sees when:
- He keeps on looking at that thing.
- He keeps on thinking about the thing.
- He always desires for that thing.
- He thinks that he cannot live without that thing.
- He does anything to get that thing.
- He makes trouble if that thing is denied him or feels discomfort if the thing is taken way from him.
- He is addicted to that thing.
This is attachment, also called possessiveness.
Desiring what belongs to other is a sin. Many of the people desire what belongs to others. When they see a very fine car, they wish that they are the owner, instead of behaving as if they do not even know that the car is present. When they see a beautiful house, they wish it were their own, instead of by-passing the house as if it is not there. It is sin to spend your time longing for what belongs to others.
21 'You shall not covet (desire, long for, yearn for) your neighbor's wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.'
Deuteronomy 5:21
Jesus said, “Become passers-by.” That means to live as if the worldly possessions are not important to you. Do not concern yourself with accumulation and hoarding of wealth. To concern yourself with accumulation and hoarding of wealth, is like a magnet that keeps you bound to the world of matter, and at death, you shall not be able to ascend to the brighter regions called the heavens. It is a law of the spirit that you go to wherever your heart desires. “For where your treasure is, there your heart is.” And wherever your heart is, there you are.
It is the desires of your heart that cause you to be angry when the desires are not fulfilled. You are spirit, and spirit can live independent of possessions. God is independent before, during and after creation. You are spirit, not the body.
